What not to do when visiting Afghanistan
Don't initiate a conversation with a woman and don't ask a male about his wife or female relatives.

Don't give alcohol as a gift. When bringing a gift, be subtle and don't immediately give it, but instead discreetly place it near the door or where you sit down. The green colour is good for wedding gift wrapping.

Don't forget to handshake when greeting - people also place their hands over the heart and nod slightly. Women and men never shake hands or speak alone directly to one another - eye contact between men and women should be avoided.

Did you know?
Anyone in Afghanistan who is assigned the number 39 on his license plate will not have an easy time. The number is associated with prostitution.
Don't be alone with the woman in the same room if you're a man - if this happens, make sure the door is left open.

Don't forget to remove shoes when entering someone's place.

Don't forget homosexuality is illegal here.

Don't be surprised if you're seated on the floor (usually on cushions) when eating at someone's place. If you can, sit cross-legged.

Don't forget business is very much personal here - if you haven't already invested some time in getting to know your counterparts, use initial meetings to establish trust. Once done, you can move to the business.

Did you know?
Afghanistan is the world’s largest producer of Opium.
Don't forget the communication style is somewhat indirect - it's important to phrase questions intelligently, you will rarely get "no" as the answer.

Don't drink tap water - it's not drinkable.
