What not to do when visiting Angola
Don't forget to shake hands when greeting new people - don't rush it, ask about family and other matters. Greet the eldest first.
Don't take pictures or use binoculars, maps, or GPS near government buildings, military installations or key infrastructure.
Don't disrespect government officials - it can lead to expulsion from the country.
Did you know?
Angola didn’t become independent from the Portuguese Empire until 1975.
Don't forget to bring a small gift when invited to someone's home - fruit, flowers or chocolates are fine.
Don't forget northern sections of Angola can be subject to flooding during the rainy season, November-April.
Don't drink tap water - it's not safe to drink, even in Luanda.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't forget to check medical matters - cholera cases are common in Angola.
