What not to do when visiting Azerbaijan
Don't forget to make warm and friendly greetings - a handshake between the men with a kiss on the cheek and "salaam" (means "peace - hello"). Women hug and kiss each other on left cheek - women usually don't shake hands among themselves, although many will shake hands with a foreigner. Male should wait for a woman to extend the hand - if so, shake hands lightly.
Don't photograph military installations and equipment. Police may also stop you when taking photographs of non-military sites, like oil fields or public squares. Cooperate with the police
Don't be alarmed to see men in military clothes - Azerbaijan has mandatory military service for male citizens ages 18 to 35.
Did you know?
Azerbaijan is home to the world’s largest Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Don't accept a gift immediately - refuse one or two times before accepting it. Always insist it's too much to appreciate the giver.
Don't forget to drive with extra attention - reckless driving is prevalent and drivers often travel high speed and don't pay attention to regulations.
