What not to do when visiting Czech Republic
Don't call it Czechoslovakia anymore.
Don't compare local beer to the big, tasteless brands. Don't order imported beer.
Don't forget to take off your shoes when entering someone's home.
Did you know?
The Czech Republic has the world’s highest percentage of atheists per capita.
Don't be surprised if your glass is "automatically" refilled when empty. If you don't want more, just don't finish it until leave.
Don't break the eye contact when proposing a toast. Some say if you look away, you're doomed to many years of bad sex.
Don’t schedule business meetings on Friday afternoon - many people leave for their country cottages after lunch.
Don't forget, saying "Thank you" to a service persons means 'Keep the change'.
Don’t forget to handshake when greeting (men). Women usually greet with light kisses on both cheeks (”air kisses” where you just touch cheeks and kiss the air), a handshake is common on first meeting. Eye contact is important.
Don't smack or slurp - it's not appreciated.
Don't avoid eye contact business and personal conversations. It's a sign of courtesy.
Don't necessary wear high heels - lots of streets are either cobblestone, Belgian block, or other uneven sidewalk.
Don't necessarily decide to bike anywhere. Prague is not a fully bike-able city, especially in the centre.
Don't enter buses, trains or similar before everyone who wants to get out has done so.
Don't forget to wear reflectors when riding a bike or walking at dark.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don’t be an easy victim of small petty crimes - be cautious on your valuables in public. Popular tourist locations such as the Charles Bridge, Wenceslas, and Old Town squares may attract pickpockets and fraud artists.
