What not to do when visiting Dominica
Don’t forget to shake hands and maintain direct eye contact when greeting (men). "Tap” is also popular greeting - make a fist and tap it against the other person's fist. Women don’t usually do the "tap” and rather kiss on the cheek.
Don’t be surprised locals placing fist across the chest and point it towards you - this is saying goodbye, peace or "one love”. It’s a sign of friendship.
Don’t take the following expressions as jokes - sucking air through the teeth to make a sucking sound is used to express anger or annoyance. Pressing your lips together and sticking them out as if for a kiss is also a sign of displeasure.
Did you know?
Dominica is home to the world’s largest thermal lakes.
Don't sit under a ripe coconut tree - better to be safe than sorry, falling coconuts kill 150 people each year.
Don't take pictures of locals without permission.
Don’t show your middle finger - it’s an obscene gesture.
Don't dive or snorkel without a floating marker on water.
Don’t be a victim of mosquito-borne diseases - protect yourself against bites by mosquitoes.
Did you know?
Massacre' is the name of a river dedicated to the murders of the Native villagers by French and British settlers, because the river ran red with blood for days. Each (French and British) claimed the island and imported slaves from Africa. The remaining Caribs now live on a 15 ka territory on the east coast of the island. They elect their own chief. This mix of cultures is important to Dominica.
Don't forget to negotiate your taxi ride price before you take it.
Don’t forget the hurricane season takes place between June and November.
Don’t forget consensual same-sex conduct is illegal.
Don't really look for a deal - things are not that cheap in Caribbean.

We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't forget coral-safe sunscreen - if you go to water excursions, some of them may not allow you to join without coral-safe sunscreen.
