What not to do when visiting Hungary
Don't clink glasses when toasting in Hungary - it's associated with the execution of the 13 Martyrs of Arad in 1849.

Don't mention these topics when in Hungary - Trianon, gypsies, jokes about then being "Hungry".

Don’t forget to shake hands when greeting. Friends kiss one another lightly on both cheeks, usually starting with left.

Did you know?
Hungary was founded in exactly 1000 AD (as a kingdom. It had existed earlier as a principality).
Don't call Hungarians Slavic - even Hungary is in the Slavic region, they don't have Slavic origin.

Don't break the eye contact when proposing a toast. Some say if you look away, you're doomed to many years of bad sex.

Don’t give a foreign wine - the Hungarians are proud of the wines they produce.

Don't forget, saying "Thank you" to a service persons means 'Keep the change'.

Don’t forget to handshake when greeting (men). Women usually greet with light kisses on both cheeks (”air kisses” where you just touch cheeks and kiss the air), a handshake is common on first meeting. Eye contact is important.

Don't smack or slurp - it's not appreciated.

Don't avoid eye contact business and personal conversations. It's a sign of courtesy.

Don't forget to know your frӧccs - Hungarian summer drink. It's wine mixed with soda, but there are various ratios and names, e.g. Krúdy frӧccs or sportfrӧccs.

Don't enter buses, trains or similar before everyone who wants to get out has done so.

Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't forget to wear reflectors when riding a bike or walking at dark.
