What not to do when visiting Iraq
Don't show the soles of your feet to someone in Iraq - it's extremely insulting, feet are seen as unclean body parts.
Don’t forget to shake hands when greeting (men) - kisses on each cheek is also common. The number of kisses may vary.
Don’t to the ”thumbs-up” or ”A-OK” gesture - it’s considered obscene for older Arabs.
Did you know?
If a man in Iraq sends a gift to someone, he has to pretend he is sending it as another woman, e.g. mother, sister or other acquaintance.
Don’t make too long eye contact, especially to a woman if you are a man - it can be considered as harassment.
Don’t point with a single finger - it's considered rude. Use the whole hand(s) instead.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't bath naked or topless.
