What not to do when visiting Ivory Coast
Don’t forget to shake hands when greeting (men) - always ask about the person’s health, family or work. Women usually kiss each other three times on the cheeks, alternating the sides.
Don’t necessarily use local vans ("Gbaka") - they are frequently involved in accidents.
Don’t be surprised by high customs fees if you bring new items that are or may appear to/for resale - be prepared to pay almost 45% in customs duties. There are many cases travellers have no receipts and officers assigned higher values for the items.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't underestimate the power of the ocean when swimming - the currents along the coast can be powerful and treacherous.
