What not to do when visiting Kazakhstan
Don’t forget to shake hands (usually with both hands and a warm smile) when greeting. Women typically greet with a both-handed handshake or a slight nod of acknowledgement. Women friends may kiss on the cheek, and light hugs are typical for the family.
Don’t forget it's a taboo for religiously observant men to touch women and vice-versa.
Don’t necessarily touch another person during the conversations, especially between the different sexes.
Did you know?
Kazakhstan’s largest lake, Lake Balkhash, is one of the only water bodies in the world that is half fresh water and half salt water.
Don’t put the thumb in between your middle and index finger - it’s an obscene gesture, same as hooking two fingers together.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't forget to have your shoes always clean - shoes are essential, especially in business.
