What not to do when visiting Libya
Don't wear tight and revealing clothes - it’s rude.
Don’t forget men greet with warm handshake accompanied by ’Salaamu Aleikum’ (peace be upon you) the response is ”Wa Alaikum as-salamma” (and on peace be you). Women greet similarly. Social interactions between non-related members of the opposite sex are not frequent - a handshake will usually not be included in the introduction. Always wait for the woman to initiate, if at all.
Don’t fail to greet people you meet - it’s considered rude. Give a general greeting when you enter a room full of strangers.
Don't necessarily ask about a person’s wife, sister or adult daughter - better to refer to the family as a whole.
Don’t show love affection in public - it’s not widely accepted.
Don’t keep your hands in pockets when speaking to someone - it’s disrespectful.
Don't use the left hand for eating or handing things over.
Don’t show the soles of your feet to someone or point with any part of the foot at any person.
Don’t ever disrespect anyone’s family name.
Don’t photograph military and government facilities - it’s illegal.
Don’t forget same-sex sexual relations are criminalised in Libya.
Don’t necessarily take the traffic easily - always be cautious as there’s a high accident rate.
Don’t try to import alcohol, pornography or pork products - it’s illegal.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don’t necessarily consider two men or women are holding hands as partners - they just show the friendship and it doesn’t mean they have a love relationship.
