What not to do when visiting Moldova
Don't forget to shake hands when greeting (men). Women typically greet with a hug and kiss on the cheek, or simply with “Hello, how are you". Men greet women with a handshake. Older men can also kiss the hand of the woman when introduced.
Don’t disrespect the elders in public - always pay respect to them, give them a seat in public transport, hold the door for them or help with the baggage.
Don’t necessarily photograph military facilities, checkpoints or security forces - it’s prohibited.
Did you know?
Moldova had a civil war shortly after independence during which soldiers from both sides would commonly fight during the day then meet at bars and drink together at night.
Don't break the eye contact when proposing a toast. Some say if you look away, you're doomed to many years of bad sex.
Don't forget, saying "Thank you" to a service persons means 'Keep the change'.
Don’t forget to handshake when greeting (men). Women usually greet with light kisses on both cheeks (”air kisses” where you just touch cheeks and kiss the air), a handshake is common on first meeting. Eye contact is important.
Don't smack or slurp - it's not appreciated.
Don't avoid eye contact business and personal conversations. It's a sign of courtesy.
Don't enter buses, trains or similar before everyone who wants to get out has done so.
