What not to do when visiting Norway
Don't ask questions concerning church - it can be taken as disrespect as many people don't attend any church there.
Don't expect any formalities - usually people talk informally and refer to each other by their first names.
Don’t necessarily discuss business when dining at someone’s home.
Did you know?
When you get a book published in Norway, the Government will buy 1000 copies and will distribute them to libraries.
Don't complain about the prices - they know it's ridiculous.
Don't expect Oslo fjord to be an actual fjord…
Don’t be late for the meetings - punctuality indicates trustworthiness.
Don't forget you can hike or pitch a tent in any unfenced land thanks to Right of Access.
Don’t forget Svalbard archipelago is not part of the Schengen Agreement, even it belongs to Norway.
Did you know?
The king of Norway supposedly gave Henry III a pet polar bear as a present.
Don't forget to place your knife and fork across your plate with the prongs facing down and the handles facing to the right when finished eating.

We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't be surprised you can't get any alcohol all the time - there are strict laws and you may find alcohol to be expensive and available only during certain hours.
Don’t give even number of flowers and don’t give carnations, lilies or white flowers - they are associated with funerals.
Don't underestimate the country's size. From Oslo to Kirkenes in the Norweigan Arctic is about the same distance as Oslo to Rome.
Don’t forget to handshake when greeting (men). Women usually greet with light kisses on both cheeks (”air kisses” where you just touch cheeks and kiss the air), a handshake is common on first meeting. Eye contact is important.
Don't smack or slurp - it's not appreciated.
Don't avoid eye contact business and personal conversations. It's a sign of courtesy.
Don't forget to disrobe completely before you sauna - bring a towel (only) if you are shy.
Don't enter buses, trains or similar before everyone who wants to get out has done so.

Don't forget to wear reflectors when riding a bike or walking at dark.
