What not to do when visiting Rwanda
Don’t forget to shake hands when greeting. Handshakes tend to be energetic and often linger through the greeting process and sometimes the entire conversation. A handshake or nod of acknowledgement is appropriate in most situations among women.
Don’t necessarily discuss someone’s ethnicity or making any referral to the war, genocide or politics.
Don't make sarcastic jokes, but humour in general is highly values.
Did you know?
Rwanda’s parliament is 56% female.
Don’t promote ideas based on ”ethnic, regional, racial, religious, language, or other divisive characteristics” - it's prohibited.
Don’t photograph military sites, government buildings, airports or public monuments - it's prohibited.
Don’t forget plastic shopping and grocery bags are banned and may be confiscated upon arrival.
Don't fail to follow the instructions of your guide when visiting wildlife areas.
Don’t point with your index finger - use the whole hand instead.
Did you know?
In eastern Africa, you can buy beer brewed from bananas.
Don’t forget to dress well, especially in Kigali. People take pride in their appearance and tend to dress up.
Don't be surprised if persons under age of 15 are refused to take the gorilla tracking experience. Flash photography of gorillas is banned and you won't be able to take more than one bag into a safari.
Don't give the money or sweets directly to beggars - it's a long-term problem and better consider to support local funding or charity.
