What not to do when visiting Tajikistan
Don’t forget to shake hands when greeting - placing the left hand over the heart and bow slightly demonstrates respect.
Don’t enter a home or room where there are only women (if you’re a man) and don’t stay alone with a man if you’re a woman.
Don’t necessarily try to touch or get close to stray and street dogs, even they’re usually not aggressive.
Did you know?
In Tajikistan, a monobrow is considered particularly sexy.
Don’t enter the Gorno-Badakhshan region without official permission - you may be arrested or imprisoned.
Don’t forget to stand when another guest enters - women and men often seat separately at social gatherings.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don’t be shy to bargain at markets - it’s expected.
