What not to do when visiting Turkmenistan
Don’t forget to shake hands when greeting and departing (same sex). A simple nod of acknowledgement is common at first meeting between women and men, wait for the woman to extend her hand for the handshake (if at all). The Russian-speaking population may exchange a kiss on each cheek.
Don’t display love affection in public.
Don’t lose your face or cause losing face to anyone - it’s essential in communication.
Did you know?
There is a giant hole in the ground that has been burning for years due to natural gas reserves in Turkmenistan.
Don’t travel to “restricted zones” and border areas with Iran, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan without prior permission from the government. It takes around ten days to process requests for special travel permits.
Don’t photograph government buildings, military installations or food markets without permission.
Don’t enter a taxi without negotiating or agreement on the price in advance.
Don’t forget young unmarried women have two braids along with a small scarf. Married women have a single braid.
Don’t forget the thumb up sign means “good or great” - open hand raised up means “hello”.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don’t miss your connection if you transit through Turkmenistan - you will have to purchase a ticket for an onward flight before being allowed to leave the arrival area.
