What not to do when visiting Uganda
Don’t forget to shake hands when greeting. To express special deference, the hand-shaker may lightly grip his hand-shaking forearm with the opposite hand.
Don’t show off with expensive clothes or jewellery in public - keep a low profile to avoid unwanted attention.
Don’t forget humour plays a significant role in communicating. Stories and proverbs are common means of expressing a point indirectly and require the implicit knowledge of the listener.
Did you know?
Uganda is home to 11% of the world’s bird population.
Don’t leave your drink or food unattended.
Don’t point to people with your index finger - it’s rude. Use the whole hand/arm instead.
Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don’t forget consensual same-sex sexual relations are criminalised in Uganda.
