What not to do when visiting Ukraine
Don’t forget to shake hands with direct eye contact when greeting. Female friends tend to kiss each other three times on the cheeks. A slight nod of acknowledgement is common between opposite sexes.

Don't clear up your plate - it indicates you're still hungry in Ukraine. Always leave a little food on your plate at the end of a meal to avoid insulting your host.

Don’t be surprised by occasional yelling in public. Bus driver yells at a passenger and the passenger yells back - it’s viewed as a standard way of working things out.

Did you know?
Ukraine is one of the only countries in the world with a national costume.
Don’t point with your index finger - better to use the whole hand instead.

Don’t put the thumb in between middle and index finger while making a fist - it’s an obscene gesture.

Don't expect when the woman wears tight or revealing clothes on the street to be straightly open for a sin. It's usually the other way round - the more challenging dress she wears, the more serious relationship she seeks.

Don't break the eye contact when proposing a toast. Some say if you look away, you're doomed to many years of bad sex.

Don't forget, saying "Thank you" to a service persons means 'Keep the change'.

Don’t enter internationally recognised Ukrainian territory through a border point that isn’t currently controlled by the Ukrainian authorities - it’s illegal.

Don’t forget to handshake when greeting (men). Women usually greet with light kisses on both cheeks (”air kisses” where you just touch cheeks and kiss the air), a handshake is common on first meeting. Eye contact is important.

Don't smack or slurp - it's not appreciated.

Don't avoid eye contact business and personal conversations. It's a sign of courtesy.

Don't enter buses, trains or similar before everyone who wants to get out has done so.

Tell us your experience
We love to hear from people who have travelled the world and know ‘what not to do’. Why not help other people on their travels?
Don't forget to wear reflectors when riding a bike or walking at dark.
